So, you want to be an inline hockey referee? The best way to develop your skills as an inline hockey official is to become certified as a USA Hockey Inline official and work USA Hockey Inline sanctioned games. USA Hockey Inline is the premier inline hockey sanctioning organization, with a well trained staff of officiating instructors, extensive supporting documentation for officiating, coaching, and league development, including league management and sanctions for serious infractions. How
do I get "certified"? Register online at the USA Hockey Inline Referee Page Inline Hockey Referee application form or call USA Hockey Inline at 1-800-888-INLN and request one.
Complete the form with credit card payment or mail it with a check for $30 to USA Hockey Inline. You should receive your test packet in the mail 7 - 14 days after sending in the registration form, and if you don't then contact: Jeremy Kennedy at USA Hockey Inline on 800-888-4656 ext. 117 or e-mail him jeremyk @ usahockeyinline . org
USA Hockey Inline will mail you a referee identification card, rule book, and an open book exam. At this point, you are classified as "APPROVED" and are allowed to officiate in USA Hockey Inline sanctioned games for 30 days.
You will need to purchase an Inline Referee jersey. The simplest thing to do is to buy one inline. We suggest purchasing from the Officials Wearhouse. You will also need a finger whistle, these can be purchased at local sporting stores.
Complete the open book rules test and return it to USA Hockey Inline. USA Hockey Inline will grade the test. If you pass the test (35 questions correct of 50), you will be sent a USA Hockey Inline crest to wear on your referee jersey, and you will be classed as "ACCREDITED." If not, you will be mailed another score sheet for another opportunity.
The final, optional step is to attend a USA Hockey Inline Officiating Seminar. If you attend a seminar, you will receive an Inline Official's Manual, which is a guidebook to positioning, conduct, presentation, and other aspects of officiating which are not covered by official rules. Once seminar attendance is completed, you will be classified as "CERTIFIED."
ACCREDITED and CERTIFIED officials are eligible to apply to work the USA Hockey Inline Regional and National Championships, the highest level USA Hockey Inline tournaments. Where
do I get started working in the Northern Virginia area? There are Inline Hockey Leagues in Leesburg, Ashburn, Chantilly, and Fredericksburg. New leagues are starting up regularly and the existing leagues continue to expand. So, there's plenty of opportunity. The Northern Virginia Supervisor of Officials can assist you to get in contact with these leagues, and each league receives a list of APPROVED, ACCREDITED, and CERTIFIED officials on a monthly basis, so they will have contact information for you. |
